After taking abortion pills or having a surgical abortion, it’s normal to have questions or concerns about what’s happening in your body. Understanding what is typical during recovery and what may signal a complication can help you protect your health and feel more confident about your next steps.

At Ventura County Pregnancy Center, we provide free, confidential support for women navigating their pregnancy choices. If you’re unsure about your symptoms or seeking guidance, reach out today to schedule a private one-on-one consultation.

Understanding Recovery and Risks

Both medical and surgical abortions involve changes in your body as it heals. Cramping and bleeding are normal, but complications can occur due to bacteria entering the uterus or if all pregnancy tissue is not fully expelled, a situation sometimes called an incomplete abortion. This can increase the risk of infection or other complications.

Signs You Should Seek Help

If you notice anything concerning, contact a healthcare provider as soon as possible. Possible symptoms that require medical attention can include:

  • Fever (generally 100.4°F / 38°C or higher) that lasts 24 to 48 hours or persistent chills
  • Heavy bleeding that soaks multiple pads in a short period
  • Severe or worsening abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Unusual or foul-smelling discharge
  • Persistent nausea, vomiting, or feelings of weakness
  • Flu-like symptoms or general malaise that don’t improve

Preventing Infection

Taking these precautions during recovery can help reduce the risk of infection after an abortion:

  • Monitor how you’re feeling, and check your temperature if you feel feverish. Ongoing fever should be evaluated by a medical provider.
  • Take any prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed, and complete the full course if medication was provided.
  • After a surgical abortion, avoid using tampons for one week. After a medical abortion, tampon use may be allowed sooner, depending on guidance from your provider.
  • Do not have intercourse for two to three weeks, or until cleared by your provider.
  • Avoid douching, scented products, or adding perfumes, oils, or bubbles to bath water during recovery.

Why Prompt Support Matters

Untreated complications can have serious consequences. Infections left unaddressed can develop into pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), damage reproductive organs, or, in rare cases, become life-threatening. Early evaluation and treatment, often with antibiotics, can prevent these outcomes and support a safer recovery.
